A Comet’s Tale: Concept Board Books

Since joining Let’s Make Picture Books (https://www.letsmakepicturebooks.com/) I have learned way more than I expected. We all know there is a lot of free content out there, which is why I was reluctant to join a paid membership group. I am so glad that I did. I hope it never ends.

In August, our theme was The Universe, and the challenge was to thumbnail an entire concept board book. A concept board book is aimed at 0-3 years. Meant to introduce babies and toddlers to concepts such as counting, ABC’s, etc.

I started thumbnails for a story explaining how the sun gives off so much heat, that as a comet gets closer, its “tail” grows because of the gas and ice and dust “melting” off of it. It’s called A Comet’s Tale. Here are some of the sketches and some finals that have made it to my portfolio. I would love to develop this further at some point.

Zoomin past Uranus…tail is just starting to grow.

Out little comet has made it to the sun, zoomin round with a very long tail, and is heading back home to the Kuiper Belt.

colour roughs - it’s so helpful to have the color palette decided before moving to final.
